What is Spatial Computing?
Sure, the term Spatial Computing may sound oddly intriguing, slightly daunting and somewhat otherworldly, but this technology is gaining traction as its presence is becoming integral to our day-to-day lives.
Simply put, Spatial Computing refers to using technology to interact with the space around us as a medium. It involves blending immersive technologies such as Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality, and Mixed Reality, to our actual reality, which allows for more natural, intuitive, and impactful interactions. In order to achieve this, Spatial Computing involves developing a symbiotic two-way relationship between humans and machines.
As such, despite being bound to the physical hardware itself, when paired to Spatial Computing technologies, we can explore extended hybridized realities that are designed and optimized to evoke emotion and/or heighten our 5 Senses (Sight, Touch, Taste, Sound, and Smell). In essence, Spatial Computing digitally abstracts the hardware to make way for natural human interactions achievable via gesture-based interactions, gaze-based interactions, voice-based interactions, headpose, and more...
Given the technology's immersive and multimodal nature, Spatial Computing requires a truly human-centered and, in most cases, a Human-in-the-Loop approach. Unlike most technological products we're accustomed to using, Spatial Computing brings forth an intrinsic interactive dimension that involves notions of space, sensorial experience, embodiment, and physicality, as explained in an article written by Pierre-Luc Lapointe, our Chief Innovation Officer. Therefore, instead of adopting a technology-centered approach that is steeped in an objective perspective, we can now explore the subjective nature of the human-machine relationship. In other words, when it comes to Spatial Computing applications, we refer to the type of interaction we're engaged in, which requires a persistent and contextually adaptive understanding of the spatial and multidimensional dynamics at play.
